Review ¿ Grass Author Keum Suk Gendry-Kim 102 S heavy brushwork on the somber interiors of Lee’s memoriesThe cartoonist Gendry Kim’s interviews with Lee become an integral part of Grass forming the heart and architecture of this powerful nonfiction graphic novel and offering a holistic view of how Lee’s wartime suffering changed her Grass is a landmark graphic novel that makes personal the desperate cost of war and the importance of pea. Book blurb Grass is a powerful antiwar nonfiction graphic novel telling the life story of a Korean girl named Okseon Lee who was forced into sexual slavery for the Japanese Imperial Army during the Second World War a disputed chapter in twentieth century Asian historyWar is hell for all involved but we mostly hear war stories from the male POV so I really appreciated this biography which gives us an up close and intimate look at a different POV This biography of Okseon Lee tells us her life story and it is not an easy read Comfort women That sanitized label doesn t begin to describe the horrors that so many women endured during WW2 This is a compelling important and difficult read The illustration stylistic choices the author makes initially gave me pause It s all black and white with a brush pen Nature is beautifully and meticulously captured and yet the women themselves seem like something was off what with those triangular noses etc The rapists had incomplete faces However I think this was actually a brilliant device The men were mostly faceless because they were interchangeable and anonymous The women weren t valued like trees and nature they re seen as subhuman and the art showcases that really wellI m so glad that this work was translated into English and I plan to seek out documentaries and films about these women Their stories are not as well known as say Holocaust stories and I think it s important not forget that horrible things happened in Asia as well as EuropeThe only reason I docked a star was because the author inserts herself into the tale and there are sections about her that detracted from the telling of Ms Lee s compelling narrative This is a tough read but highly recommendedNote My library had a YA label on the book which surprised me Maybe for the 18 crowd This would not be appropriate for younger readers
