This review is for the English Edition published by Restless Books and translated by Emma Ramadan and Tom RobergeI stumbled upon this book at a book fair in Brooklyn and it grabbed my attention because it is a beautiful book the book itself is published on thick rough edged paper that feels so good to have in my hands a real throw back to when publishers made an effort The story is interesting a mute feral child leaves the woods and discovers the world or at least France Every new sight is a revelation described in stunning language Meeting people forces the boy to rely on his innate skills and he learns from every experience The journey forces him to adapt to the ways of society Mostly kind people are there to guide and shelter him each one changing himAs the story continues the Boy learns to trust to love and also to protect himself Then he goes to War and he learns much about mankind and his place in the worldThe story meanders a bit and there are portions that were overly long and very explicit sometimes I found my attention wandering However the incredible skill of this author the beauty of his writing is what really amazed me The descriptions the language it is truly poetryFull kudos to the translators who must have exhausted their thesaurus it cannot be easy to translate a work like this and the fact that the English version is so impressive is a credit to them as well as the authorThanks to Restless Books for the recommendation and the beautiful edition

Le Garçon Read & download à PDF, DOC, TXT, eBook or Kindle ePUB free Winner of the prestigious Prix Femina The Boy is an expansive and entrancing historical novel that follows a nearly feral child from the French countryside as he joins society and plunges into the torrid events of the first half of the 20th centuryThe boy does not speak The boy has no name The boy raised half wild in the forests of southern France sets out alone into the wilderness and the greater world beyond Without experience of another person aside from his mother the boy mus. Malgr ce ue certains d entre vous pourraient croire affirmait le m decin major la guerre repr sente le plus haut degr de la civilisationui l a cr e disait le m decin C est l homme ui la pratiue L homme Et lui seul La guerre messieurs est l apanage de notre esp ce Homo SapiensVery fresh and inventive take on a mild Kaspar Hauser type Unlike the original KH the Gar on is not entirely stunted by social deprivation and early life in a darkened room but he is presented to us as a blank slate a kind of Everyman who must first be socialised then learn a code of honour and finally be civilised by music and art at the hand of a fair maiden named of course Emma for she is everything However there s an early sign that Emma might be slightly transgressive not the perfect rather bland image of early 20th century womanhood that you expect She is scarred And indeed she takes his education in hand in ways than one So just when you think here we go it s going to end as a game of happy families because Emma could hardly avoid getting pregnant surely this is 1913 4 and they are both such innocents and vigorous inventive and freuent in their love making no it begins to shift As if to make up for the Gar on s lack of language Emma is intoxicated inebriated is made ardent and concupiscent by words Her own other people s it matters little whose words for her open up the empire of carnal delights But Emma and the boy she has named Felix do draw the line at the Maruis de Sade Perhaps we will be safe after allBut you will have noted the date We are reminded of the march of historyAnd thus this story of education initiation into pleasures both intellectual and sensual this straight line of progress towards civilisation is not merely stopped but reversed by the inhumanity that is war All is undone All is undoneThis novel won the Prix Femina in 2016 When I checked to see what the raison d tre of the Prix Femina was I found that it is obviously not exclusively awarded to female writers but simply simply to the best of the year Its uniue selling point is that the jury is made up entirely of women Which naturally got me wondering what the particular appeal of an entirely mute male protagonist might have been to those good ladies Although he does speak once just once in the whole novel Pardonne moi I could also easily imagine that the jury was as delighted as I was to meet a female protagonist who took initiative one who actually enjoyed sex explored sex pushed the boundaries as far as she wanted to go I m sure that diminishes this engrossing novel turns it into to some kind of political statement which is not my intent and not what it deserves So let me assume that the jury actually awarded the prize in recognition of Malte s ability to write frankly and freshly about those essentials sex and war And history And for the pleasurable mix of wit and melancholy in the ironic narrative voiceCaveat a language that is not your own is less likely to make you cringe so my impression of freshness may just be my lack of ability to recognise a clich in French or sense the taboo of vulgar expressions Never mind I enjoyed myself
