Review The Politics of Losing Rory McVeigh ☆ 2 Characters Review Ò PDF, DOC, TXT, eBook or Kindle ePUB free ☆ Rory McVeigh Sent a sociological analysis of the Klan's outbreaks that goes beyond Trump the individual to show how his rise to power was made possible by a convergence of circumstances White Americans' experience of declining privilege and perceptions of lost power can trigger a political backlash that overtly asserts white nationalist goals The Politics of Losing offers a rigorous and lucid explanation for a recurrent phenomenon in American history with important lessons about the origins of our alarming political climate. McVeigh and Estab have done a great service to America by presenting a clear and reasoned thesis about how and why the culture of resentment and loss of privilege can lead to far right nationalistic and white supremacist movements Potential readers please understand that the authors do not make an euivalence between the Klan and Trumpism they merely use the Klan as a recurrent social political movement in the US that shares many common themes of white resentment and bigotry with aspects of the Trump candidacy and political movement Using the Klan as a historical model the authors identify several features of evolving American society since the Civil War that give rise to a culture of loss among the majority white Protestant citizenry Using these features and knowledge of the present day economic and cultural realities in the US they examined both primarycaucus and general election voting data and voter demographic information county by county in the 2016 as well as previous 2 3 election cycles to identify trends Many of the trends that pointed to the ascendency of Donald Trump relate to similar trends that led to rises of the Klan For Trump specifically the strongest traits predicting support prior to the election and after his taking office are white voters lacking a college education and residing in areas where manufacturing or related trades eg coal mining was long before the 2008 Great Recession After 2008 when globalization intersected with recovery and high tech and high education jobs filled the ranks of employment these white voters were left out Trump s rhetoric speaks directly to this demographic as he promises to bring back their previous jobs and shelter them from need to retrain or educated themselves Race intersects with all of this because these same people often perceive the other be they black brown or religiously different as taking or competing for the few low education reuiring jobs This is a fabulous book that I encourage my liberal and conservative friends alike to read

Review The Politics of Losing Rory McVeigh ☆ 2 Characters Review Ò PDF, DOC, TXT, eBook or Kindle ePUB free ☆ Rory McVeigh Itics of Losing Rory McVeigh and Kevin Estep trace the parallels between the 1920s Klan and today's right wing backlash identifying the conditions that allow white nationalism to emerge from the shadows White middle class Protestant Americans in the 1920s found themselves stranded by an economy that was increasingly industrialized and fueled by immigrant labor Mirroring the Klan's earlier tactics Donald Trump delivered a message that mingled economic populism with deep cultural resentments McVeigh and Estep pre. Focuses on the Klan especially the revival in the 20s when the Klan had over 5 million members and countless sympathizers And compares the Klan s 20s surge with Trump s appeal to white supremacists and rural Americans in 2016 In both eras the loss of economic power and status resulted in non college educated whites uniting to attempt to regain their earlier power and status In the 1920s industrial production made local artisans obsolete and low wage immigrants mostly Catholic and East European took most of the factory jobs By 2016 globalization and the Great Recession 2008 2009 took the jobs rural America had depended on Obama s response to the recession was globalization which helped college educated Americans but not the less educated Middle America whites felt neither party addressed their economic plight until Trump came along He promised to bring back their old jobs to build a wall to keep out immigrants who they felt were taking their jobs and to appoint judges who would overturn Roe v Wade He was exactly their kind of guy Of course Trump hasn t been able to accomplish his first two promises but in their minds at least he s trying See Sarah Posner s Unholy for an excellent description of Trump s appeal to white evangelical Christians
