To call John Terpstra a nature writer limits the scope and depth of his work He is concerned with the natural environment but in this book and his earlier work Falling into Place his focus is on the urban rather than the rural or wild and he looks closely at how made landscapes obliterate the natural geography in the name of progress and development His focus in this book is the largely forgotten Chedoke Creek part of which is buried in storm drains and at present contaminated by human waste He shows us how it is possible to see this creek as a living evolving thing by tracing it s lineage back to some of Hamilton s earliest settlers the Hess family who traveled here from Pennsylvania in the late 18th century and followed the creek to its source where they established a farm settlement This book is partly a search for that source and partly a geographical and social history of the city Hamilton Ontario where the creek though diverted and obscured by human intervention continues to run As always the writing is elegant and spare and Terpstra s observations are wise and compassionate
